Level 1

A Level 1 sleep study is the gold standard of sleep testing. It’s an overnight stay in a specialised sleep clinic where your breathing, brain waves, heart rate, and movements are closely monitored to get the most accurate picture of your sleep health.

Level 2

Level 2

Designed for home use, this test captures the same detailed data as an in-lab study. It measures brain waves, breathing effort, oxygen levels, heart rate, and other vital signs to provide a full clinical picture without needing a hospital stay.

Level 3

Level 3

This simplified home test focuses on key signals like airflow, breathing effort, oxygen levels, and heart rate. It’s a practical option for people with a high likelihood of sleep apnoea, offering convenience and clinical usefulness.

Level 4

Level 4

Ideal for quick screening, this test tracks one or two basic signals such as oxygen levels and pulse rate while you sleep at home. It’s useful for spotting moderate to severe sleep apnoea in people who are likely to have the condition.

Pharmacy Sleep Clinics provides Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 sleep studies, all conducted from the comfort of your home. A GP referral is not required for Level 4 testing, but it is necessary for Level 2 and Level 3.

Level 2 Sleep Test

Level 2 Sleep Test

Similar to Level 1 (in-lab testing) but done in the comfort of your home.

Can differentiate between sleep stages and identify other sleep disorders beyond OSA.

Records 7 or more channels, including brain waves (EEG), eye movement, muscle activity, airflow, oxygen levels, heart rate, and breathing effort.

Requires a referral from your GP as part of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) eligibility and Medicare guidelines for clinically indicated testing.

Level 3 Sleep Test

Conducted at home using a simplified monitoring device.

Typically monitors 4 to 7 channels, such as airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, and heart rate.

Focused on detecting moderate to severe OSA in patients with high pre-test probability.

Typically involves a small wearable device with minimal setup, making it comfortable and straightforward for most users.

Level 4 Sleep Test

Level 4 Sleep Test

Very simple to use and usually involve a small wearable device like a finger sensor, with minimal setup at home.

Best suited for people who are highly likely to have obstructive sleep apnoea based on symptoms or screening results.

Typically monitor one or two basic signals, such as oxygen levels and heart rate.

Usually completed over one or two nights, making it a quick and convenient first step in identifying potential sleep apnoea.

You don’t always need a ‘Gold Standard’ sleep test to get answers.

Level 2 & 4 studies are clinically proven to accurately detect moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea. Research shows they perform just as well as in-lab testing when it comes to diagnosis, treatment timing, and long-term outcomes. At Pharmacy Sleep Clinics, your care is led by qualified sleep physicians and supported by local, face-to-face service. No hospital stay. No delays. Just reliable results and              personalised care, right in your community.
